NIGS Quarterly
Newsletter of the National Institute of Geological Sciences
Issue No. 1
January to March 2023
Welcome to the first issue of the NIGS Quarterly newsletter!
The National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) celebrates its Ruby (40th) Anniversary* this year. To commemorate this milestone of the institute as a recognized Center of Excellence in Geology, we launch the first issue of the NIGS Quarterly. The quarterly newsletter aims to disseminate snapshots of past, ongoing, and upcoming activities of NIGS faculty, researchers, and students.
In this first issue, we feature a rich selection of NIGS Lecture Series talks that restarted last February after a long pandemic shutdown. Researchers and students have also come back in full force doing academic and field research activities such as participating in a marine scientific research expedition in Luzon, as well as touring research facilities in Japan through the Sakura Science Program.
*NIGS was created through Executive Order No. 889 by the President of the Republic of the Philippines in March 1983. The Board of Regents (BOR) of the University of the Philippines (UP) System authorized on the 26th of May 1983 the organization of NIGS from the Geology section of the former Department of Geology and Geography of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) in UP Diliman. NIGS became an academic unit of the CS and the institute's actual operation started in January 1984.
