NIGS Faculty Workshop Aims to Align Vision with Action for Academic Excellence

The Faculty Strategic Planning Workshop took place from 11-13 August 2024 at Hotel Dominique in Tagaytay City. This event focused on fostering a culture that enhances faculty well-being while achieving academic and institutional goals. Facilitated by Mr. Kevin Ross D. Nera and Mr. Luis Christian P. Almazar from Positive Workplaces, the workshop aimed to align NIGS’ strategic vision with actionable goals in teaching, research, and public service.

The workshop kicked off with an interactive "Gratitude Pingpong" activity, encouraging participants to reflect on positive experiences and setting a collaborative tone for the sessions. Discussions centered on three key principles: openness, co-creation, and collaboration. Faculty addressed long-term environmental factors impacting the Institute, including the growing relevance of artificial intelligence, climate change research, and the need for more efficient administrative processes.

Key outputs included a 2-page strategy map outlining NIGS’ core mission of providing quality geoscience education, promoting international-level research, and fostering research collaborations. Participants identified specific metrics to track progress, such as graduation rates, faculty evaluations, and research output growth, emphasizing interdisciplinary research and a culture of innovation.

Areas for improvement were also discussed, including the necessity for better succession planning due to impending faculty retirements, increased collaboration with domestic and international partners, and the importance of work-life balance for faculty. Additionally, the need to streamline digital processes and improve funding opportunities was highlighted, along with leveraging governmental policies on environmental protection to enhance NIGS’ research agenda.

The workshop concluded with a renewed commitment to NIGS’ mission, setting clear objectives and establishing a collaborative atmosphere among faculty members to ensure continued excellence in academic and research initiatives.
