The Geoscience Foundation, Inc. and OceanaGold (Philippines), Inc. have signed a Memorandum of Agreement to improve the geological training facilities at the National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS). The signing took place on October 17, 2024, at the NIGS Conference Room. Dr. Leopoldo P. de Silva, Jr., Executive Director of the Geoscience Foundation, and Atty. Joan D. Adaci-Cattiling, President and General Manager for External Affairs and Social Performance at OceanaGold, represented the two parties. This partnership aims to enhance the quality of training for future geologists and advance scientific education in the Philippines.
NIGS is currently facing challenges due to outdated microscopes and geological specimens, which are crucial for hands-on student training. To address this, the Institute sought assistance from OceanaGold in acquiring new equipment to maintain its world-class educational standards.
OceanaGold has committed to financially supporting the purchase of these resources, reflecting the company’s dedication to advancing mining technology and geosciences. This initiative also aligns with OceanaGold's obligations under the 1995 Philippine Mining Act, which mandates the provision of funding for equipment and capital outlay to support educational and research institutions.
