Empowering Tomorrow's Experts: NIGS Graduate Students Participate in ISA Contractor Training Program

Ms. Elisha Jane M. Maglalang, Ms. Faye Anne De Leon, Ms. Chelsi Grace Mendoza, and Ms. Kristine Joy Motol, graduate students from the National Institute of Geological Sciences, took part in the recently concluded Contractor Training Program of the International Seabed Authority (ISA). The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) hosted this program in Hannover, Germany, in line with their exploration contract for polymetallic sulfides with ISA.

The training began aboard the research vessel FS SONNE from September to November 2023, during the INDEX2023 expedition in the BGR contract area in the Indian Ocean. Ms. Maglalang and Ms. De Leon participated in the first leg, receiving training on the preparation, deployment, and operation of specialized geophysical equipment. Ms. Mendoza and Ms. Motol joined the second leg, where they learned to deploy specialized geological and biological instruments and process data and samples onboard.

From May to June 2024, the participants engaged in a month-long post-cruise training, working on various research projects, such as analyzing deep-sea rock samples and processing the geophysical data obtained during the INDEX2023 expedition. They were also introduced to the laboratory facilities of BGR and other German research institutions.
