Dr. Betchaida Payot and Mr. Julius Pasco from the University of the Philippines National Institute of Geological Sciences (UP NIGS), Dr. Kenichiro Tani of the National Museum of Nature and Science in Japan, and Dr. Osamu Ishizuka of the Geological Survey of Japan (GSJ), recently conducted fieldwork in Surigao del Norte with the aim of understanding the geologic history of various igneous rocks in the region. The joint activity was conducted last February 24 to March 2, 2023.
Dr. Kenichiro Tani, Dr. Osamu Ishizuka, and Mr. Julius Pasco investigated outcrops of peridotites and other lithologic units in Nonoc island. After Nonoc Island, the team was accompanied by Dr. Betchaida Payot, where they observed exposures in the northern section of Surigao City. Dr. Tani and Dr. Ishizuka had also discussions on the ongoing research of some of the graduate students of UP NIGS. These joint activities between UP NIGS, the National Museum of Nature and Science in Japan, and GSJ further strengthened the collaboration between the three institutions and opened possibilities for future research.
