On the 6th of May 2024, researchers and faculty members from the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry Chinese Academy of Sciences (GIGCAS) and Shandong University in China visited UP-NIGS and gave a series of lectures at the NIGS Seminar Room. The professors included Dr. Xiao-Long Huang, Dr. Yang Yu, Dr. Hai-Quan Lui, and Dr. Xuanyu Chen. Moreover, a succession of field campaigns were conducted by the GIGCAS and UP-NIGS professors and students. On May 7, Dr. Yu and Dr. Lui were joined by Dr. Betchaida Payot and Mr. John Michael Ausejo for the western Luzon fieldwork. They were also accompanied by Dr. Gabriel Theophilus Valera and Mr. John Kenneth Badillo for the Bicol fieldwork from May 8 to 18. Dr. Chen, on the other hand, was joined by Dr. Payot and Mr. Nikko Balanial from May 8 to 12 for the Pinatubo fieldwork.

The fieldwork in western Luzon was focused on the basaltic deposits of Mount Arayat in Pampanga. Meanwhile, the Bicol fieldwork focused on the intermediate to mafic deposits (dacitic to basaltic) deposits of Mount Bulusan and Pocdol Hill in Sorsogon, Mount Mayon and Malinao in Albay, and Mount Iriga and Isarog in Camarines Sur. For the central Luzon fieldwork, the team visited Bucao and Sto. Tomas-Marella areas in Zambales, Pasig-Potrero and Sacobia rivers in Pampanga, and O’Donnelle in Tarlac to gather eruptive deposits of Mount Pinatubo.
