Geol 273 (Advanced Mineral Deposits) fieldwork in Benguet and Zambales

MS Geology students enrolled in Geology 273 (Advanced Mineral Deposits) class conducted fieldwork in Benguet and Zambales last May 18-19 and 25-26, 2024, respectively.  The activity was led by Dr. Jillian Aira S. Gabo-Ratio, and assisted by Mr. Marco Alfredo Barrientos, Mr. Kirk Justin Ramos, Ms. Ma. Yna Rose Garcia and Mr. Kenneth Jan Sangalang. The objective of the fieldwork is for the students to appreciate concepts and visit field exposures of hydrothermal, magmatic, and weathering deposits discussed in class.

Students conducted underground fieldwork at the Itogon-Suyoc Resources Inc. tunnel.

The students visited the Itogon-Suyoc Resources Inc. (ISRI) in Itogon, Benguet. Itogon-Suyoc Resources Inc. (ISRI) is a subsidiary of Apex Mining Company Inc. (AMCI). The trip was made possible through Dr. Eric S. Andal, Vice-President of Geology and Exploration of AMCI. Underground fieldwork was conducted to look at the mineralization of the vein system, particularly the Taka Barr vein which is the most productive and has the highest gold grade. The students were also able to look at the exploration drill core samples. Geologists from ISRI, namely Ms. Danella Trina Callosa, Mr. Paul Villora, Mr. Eldy Lim, Ms. Angela Joyce Tamaño, Mr. Ray Mark Gaviño led the team and the discussion on the structural controls of the deposit.

The 2nd leg of the fieldwork was at LNL Archipelago Minerals Inc. in Sta. Cruz, Zambales. The fieldwork was made possible through Engr. John Gregory M. Go, General Manager of LNL. The students visited chromite and nickel laterite outcrops, and mantle outcrop exposures of the Zambales Ophiolite Complex, which hosts the chromite and laterite deposits. Dr. Gabo-Ratio highlighted the processes involved in the formation of magmatic and weathering deposits. The class also visited LNL’s nursery and rehabilitation area and had the opportunity to conduct tree-planting activities. Ms. Arianne Destura, a Mine Geology Officer assisted the team at the mine site.
