The Geology 197 (Special Topics in Geology: Geochemical Techniques Applied to Hydrothermal Deposits) class conducted fieldwork in Ore Asia Mining and Development Corporation, Brgy. Camachin, Doña Remedios Trinidad, Bulacan last June 11, 2023. The main goal of the fieldwork was to visit field exposures of hydrothermal systems that were discussed in the Geol 197 class and rock samples.
The activity was led by Dr. Jillian Aira Gabo-Ratio, Mr. Marco Alfredo Barrientos, and research assistants Ms. Ma. Yna Rose Garcia, Mr. Kenneth Sangalang, and Ms. Hannagene Cleofe Dacillo. Ore Asia Mining and Development Corporation hosts an iron skarn deposit and is the only active operating iron mine in the Philippines. Ore Asia warmly welcomed the students, providing snacks and lunch, while Engr. Angel Chantey Enriquez, a mining engineer from the company, gave a concise presentation on the history and geology of their deposit and the mining techniques used for extracting iron.
Ore Asia staff welcome the faculty and students of UP NIGS.
Additionally, the students had the opportunity to examine drill cores and observe magnetite ore body exposures and skarn alteration in the open pit. Furthermore, the class visited the processing plant where the iron concentrates were produced starting from the grinding and crushing to the magnetic separation of the ore and waste.
