Geol 120 (Stratigraphy and Sedimentology) class fieldwork in the Ilocos Region

The annual Geology 120 fieldwork in the Ilocos Region was conducted last November 8 to 11, 2024. The undergraduate students from the National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) visited outcrops in the region representing different paleoenvironmental deposition processes and histories. The fieldwork was headed by Professors Dr. Sandra G. Catane and Dr. Leopoldo P. de Silva Jr., along with instructor Mr. John Paul M. Mondala, teaching associates Mr. David C. Policarpio and Mr. Justin Jorge R. Padre, and University Research Associates Ms. Erizza Rose U. Santos and Mr. Toby L. Vergara.

Annually, the Geology 120 class visits the different outcrops in the Ilocos Region due tot he excellent exposures hosting all variety of major rock types and their rich depositional history. The class first visited the outcrops on the Abra River and Solvec Point during the first day of the fieldwork. At the end of the first day, the class headed to Vigan City’s Pastoral Center. The second day fieldwork itinerary includes the Paoay Lake, Kapurpurawan Formation, and the mélange on the Baruyen Bridge. For the third day, the group headed to the La Paz Sand Dunes, Magsingal, Suso, and Santiago Outcrops. For the last day, the class studied the change in the depositional history of the Luna Beach in La Union. The fieldwork concluded with all the objectives met.
