Bridging Borders: NIGS Professors at the Taiwan-Philippines Summit

The Taiwan-Philippines Summit on Active Volcanoes, Earthquakes, Marine, and Environmental Disasters was hosted by the National Chung Cheng University in Chiayi, Taiwan from June 17 to 21, 2024. The summit aimed to promote academic exchanges and strengthen ties between Taiwan and the Philippines. It was supported by the National Science Council, the Ministry of Education, and the Center for the Promotion of Earth Sciences in Taiwan. Participants from the Rushurgent Working Group (RWG) and other academic and research institutions (University of the Philippines-Los Banos, Batangas State University, Adamson University, Mapua University, and Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) presented the results of their ongoing research projects during the 2-day summit. The papers covered various topics such as tectonics, sediment provenance, igneous and metamorphic petrology, geochemistry, environmental science, and geohazards. A meeting was also held to discuss scientific problems of common interest, with participants divided into two groups. The goal was to craft future proposals that would strengthen research collaborations between Taiwan and the Philippines.
