Marine Paleontology in Taiwan and Its Impact on the Indo-West Pacific Region

Updated: Mar 28, 2023

Last 20 March 2023, Dr. Chien-Hsiang Lin of the Biodiversity Research Center, Academia Sinica in Taiwan presented a talk for the 47th NIGS Lecture Series, entitled “Marine Paleontology in Taiwan and its Impact on the Indo-West Pacific Region” at the NIGS Audio-Visual Room. The talk was also live streamed on the NIGS' official Facebook page. Around 50 people, both physical and online attendees, participated in the event. The attendees include NIGS undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and faculty.

Some of the highlights of his talk include the Indo-West Pacific only being a fairly recent biodiversity hotspot as the fossil record they found is only up to the Early Miocene, as well as his discussion on his main fossil of study -- fish otoliths (inner ear bones) -- and how they are helpful in showing aspects on feeding ecology, archaeology, and paleontology.

Dr. Lin receives the certificate and token of appreciation from NIGS faculty.

The event was co-organized with the Nannoworks Laboratory, the Paleontological Society of the Philippines, and the Iuvenis Orbis Geological Fraternity.
