Last October 27, 2023, the NIGS Lecture Series featured three (3) renowned researchers from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) - Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS).
Adam Switzer, a Professor at the NTU-Asian School of Environment (ASE) and Assistant Dean at the NTU College of Science, started the session by talking about talked about past, historical coastal disasters in the Asia-Pacific and how interdisciplinary research can bring new insights for coastal hazards. Professor Switzer is broadly trained coastal geoscientist whose research applies interdisciplinary geoscience to solve contemporary problems at local, regional and international scales. He has pioneered the study of storm and tsunami deposits with studies in Australia, India, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, Philippines and Indonesia.
Raquel Felix gave the second talk, which focused on the behaviour of tsunamis at the source and along coastal regions using numerical modelling techniques, and applying this knowledge in tsunami hazard assessment. Dr. Felix is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Coastal Lab in NTU-EOS. She obtained her BSc and MSc in Geology at UP-NIGS and completed her PhD at NTU in 2023.
Finally, Elinor Meredith, Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Volcanic Hazards and Risk Group at the NTU-EOS, provided an overview of volcanic risk and impact assessment, as well as ways to apply current techniques to the setting of the Philippines. Dr. Meredith has a Bachelor’s degree in Geography from the University of Bristol (UK) and McMaster University (Canada), and a Master’s degree in Geophysical Hazards from University College London. She successfully completed her PhD in 2023 also at NTU.
The invited talk is co-presented by the Iuvenis Orbis Geological Fraternity and the Geomorphology and Active Tectonics Research Laboratory.
