A Review of Clean, Renewable Energy Technologies on the Road to Carbon

The last for the month of March under the NIGS Lecture Series featured a talk about renewable energy and its applicability to the Philippines with Dr. Art Romero, Jr., a Geoscientist Affiliate of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (CA, USA). Dr. Romero, who earned his PhD in Geophysics at University of California, after obtaining a BS Physics degree at University of the Philippines, Diliman in 1986, recently retired from over 25 years in the oil and gas industry. His work currently focuses on the transition to renewable energy.

The talk highlighted the different types of renewable energy that are considered fro the future energy mix of the country. Dr Romero also discussed the pros and cons of each type of technology. With over 40 in attendance in-person and online, a lively discussion ensued after the talk, including on the role of geologists on the road to more renewables, recognizing how training of geologists focus primarily on exploration of more “traditional” forms of energy sources.

The invited talk is co-presented by the Iuvenis Orbis Geological Fraternity as part of the 40th Anniversary of NIGS.
